Give Yourself a Mental Break

High School can be a very stressful time. Applying for colleges, after school practices, unhealthy diets and an awful sleep schedule can take a toll on your body and brain. Resulting in anxiety, depression and mood swings that could possibly affect your connections with others. Here are 10 ideas to improve your mental health!

1.) Meditation

Use your spare time in-between classes to close your eyes, deep breath and relax. Doing this will ease your mind and possibly give you a new perspective on your day.

2.) Make Positive Lists

Focusing on the positives of your day is very important. It’s easy to dwell on what has gone bad but recognizing the positives make the situation seem less intimidating.

3.) Set Daily Goals

Set short term goals for yourself so you can have mini victories to feel good about each day. Having these wins will give you a better perspective on your day and a more positive outlook.

4.) Reward Yourself

After these mini wins, reward yourself! Having motivation can be tricky so stay focused on goals with rewards.

5.) Stretching

Stretching can reduce any stress throughout your day. When you become anxious or overwhelmed it is very common to become tight. While walking through the halls or waiting in line for the bathroom, stretch.

6.) Get Creative

Engaging in a creative activity is shown to reduce stress and improve mood. You can do this by picking up a paint brush or sketching a doodle on a piece of paper. Recently adult coloring has been proven to reduce stress.

7.) Get Active

Join a sports team! It’s a great way to make new friends and get in shape. Being in physical shape can also improve your mental health by bring up your confidence.

8.) Listen to Music

Toss in your headphones while walking to class, preparing for a big test, or warming up before practice. Music is a proven form of therapy.

9.) Surround yourself with Loved Ones

Friends and family are a great way to improve your mental health. Whether it’s having a heart to heart with your best friend or simply enjoying the company of your mother or father.

10. ) Make sure to Laugh

When you laugh you automatically smile. Go on twitter and look at memes, use Facebook for funny videos of others. Laughter is a powerful and instant way to boost your mood.
